Mark Carney has travelled to Europe seeking closer Canada-EU relations on defence, trade and commerce, and people.

He travels to France and will attend the EU State of the Union address.

According to reports, he has put forward making Canada an affiliated member of the European Union.

Carney confirmed visa regulations and potential visa-free travel will feature in the talks.

Some commentators note the European Union's positive view of Carney does not guarantee easier trade agreements.

They also say stronger links could carry drawbacks for Canada.
