On July 30, 2026, a minimum of nine migrants died as they tried to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. A surge of people stormed the border. Spanish troops were called in after local officials were unable to control the crowd. Ceuta’s authorities reported that about 40,000 migrants arrived on foot, roughly half the city’s 80,000 residents.
The European Union declared Frontex would assist and urged Morocco to leaving by ship and road. Spanish forces maintained control over the flow under control and worked to stop further deaths.
